UC Santa Barbara scored twice in the final seven minutes to hand Loyola Marymount a 3-1 loss at Sullivan Field on Sunday. The Lions (1-1-2) got on the board first but the Gauchos (3-0-0) replied with three goals to dash the home team's upset hopes.
The San Diego State men's soccer team broke open a 1-0 game with four goals in a period of 10 minutes, 36 seconds early in the second half en route to a 6-0 victory over Albany Sunday afternoon at SDSU Sports Deck. The Aztecs (1-1-0) handed the Great Danes (3-1-0) their first loss of the season.
Scoreless for the first 72 minutes, the 21st-ranked UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team scored two goals in a 19 second span in the 73rd minute to win its third straight match, 2-0 over visiting Sacramento State.
The fifth-ranked California men's soccer team remained undefeated in 2008 as it tied No. 7 SMU, 1-1, in a battle of top-10 teams Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears (3-0-1) scored in the 82nd minute to tie the match at one.
On a day of player firsts, the No. 12 Santa Clara women's soccer team edged No. 21 Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, off a Margueritte Aozasa game-winning goal in the 75th minute. Freshman Aozasa, who has started the last four games at midfield, stepped up to Katherine Reynolds' corner kick into the goal mouth, beat her defender and slid her shot past the Titans goalkeeper Shannon Simpson to score her first collegiate goal. Santa Clara delivered the 4-0 Titans their first loss of the season.
Freshman Mykell Bates scored the game-winning goal Sunday afternoon to give the No. 12 Santa Clara men's soccer to its first win of the season. The Broncos defeated UW-Milwaukee, 2-1, in their final match of the Middleton Sports & Fitness Invitational in Madison, Wis.
